T4s & ROEs Explained
Everything Canadian employers need to know about T4 slips and Records of Employment, and how to avoid common mistakes.
What is a T4?
A T4 slip reports the income an employee earned and the deductions withheld over the calendar year. Employers must issue T4s to every employee and file a T4 Summary with the CRA by the last day of February.
What is an ROE?
A Record of Employment documents an employee's insurable earnings and hours, and is required whenever an employee has an interruption of earnings — it's what allows them to apply for EI benefits.
Common mistakes
Common mistakes include late filing, mismatched insurable earnings, and missing the CRA's strict February deadline — all of which can trigger penalties.
Working with a payroll specialist ensures your T4s and ROEs are accurate and filed on time, every year.
